Title of M.Tech. dissertation: Study of Biomethanation of Organic Fraction of Municipal solid waste

This M.Tech. research explored the potential of biomethanation to convert the liquid portion of municipal solid waste into biogas and energy-rich compounds. A lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) operated under thermophilic conditions, with OFMSW consisting of Food waste (50%), Vegetable waste (25%), Garden waste (15%), Paper, and Textile waste (5% each) on a dry weight basis. Key findings include optimal gas production at pH 7.4 – 7.8, a direct relationship between CODt reduction and biogas production, and the importance of maintaining alkaline conditions for increased gas production. Biomethanation offers a promising waste-to-energy solution for environmental and agricultural sustainability, with added energy benefits.

Doctor of Philosophy

Title of Ph.D. thesis: Sustainable Utilization of Fly Ash in In-Vessel Composting of Agricultural Waste

This research aimed to address agricultural waste management and increasing fly ash generation from thermal power plants through sustainable composting. Key findings include:

  • Optimal results were achieved with a 20% fly ash substrate, preserving organic matter and reducing the rate constant (k).
  • A high-rate thermophilic composter (HRTC) was developed and tested at various temperatures. The best performance occurred at 55°C with 70% moisture content and controlled ventilation, minimizing costs and labour.
